Mystic CT

Located at the mouth of the Mystic River between Groton and Stonington, Mystic was originally a highly profitable whaling and fishing center that still provides opportunities for commercial and sports fishing to this day. The Pequots called this area "Missi-tuk". In the Pequot tongue, Missi means "great" and Tuk refers to a river driven in waves by the tides or winds. The Mystic River is actually a salt water estuary fed by two fresh water streams.

During the era of the clipper ships, Mystic shipbuilding companies were building some of the fastest and most famous of the tall clipper ships, but by the turn of the 20th century, wooden boats were being replaced by ones with steel hulls. Mystic industries then turned to other ventures such as woolens, razors, soap and marine engines, and in 1929, the local citizens founded Mystic Seaport as a nonprofit historical society. The original community, Old Mystic, is located at
the head of the Mystic River.

The primary industry in Mystic is tourism, with the Mystic Seaport and Aquarium area, Olde Mistick Village, and downtown Mystic the four areas of attraction to visitors.

Mystic Seaport is America's largest maritime museum, featuring fishing and whaling ships that date from the pre-colonial period. The Seaport has a historic living village where activities of sailing and whaling villages are preserved. The Mystic Marine Life Aquarium is one of the nation's foremost institutions for the study and preservation of Cetaceans (whales and others of that species).

Downtown Mystic, with its' distinctive bascule drawbridge, is an excellent example of a New England fishing village. The drawbridge spans the Mystic River, and is the object of fascination to tourists year round.
