East Lyme CT
East Lyme was originally settled in the 1640's in what was then a section of the
Saybrook Plantation that stretched from Lyme to New London. The land was
originally occupied by the Nehantic Indians and was incorporated as a separate
town in 1839. Early manufacturing included a textile industry similar to that of
Belgium, from which came the name Flanders.
Sportsfishing and marinas predominate the town's industry along with summer
tourism and restaurant trade. Strong regional businesses include seafood
restaurants and hotels/motels servicing the town's beaches and the casinos at
Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. Rocky Neck State Park features camping, swimming and
picnic areas along with numerous marinas and sportsfishing companies.
The northern part of town is primarily residential homes on large lots, and
oceanfront properties offer the natural beauty of the Long Island
Sound.Recreation opportunities abound in this beautiful region, with Rocky Neck
State Park and the Nehantic State Forest among the most notable. The Outdoor Art
Show is held on the grounds of Town Hall every July, and the East Lyme Art
Gallery and Children's Museum of
Southeastern Connecticut are open year round.
