Danielson Connecticut
From its beginnings as a town in 1708,
Killingly's numerous waterways and falls were a strong influence
in its development. Sawmills and gristmills were built along
waterways and the mill sites made nearby properties more
suitable for manufacturing than for agriculture uses. Thus,
Killingly grew up as a collection of small mill villages, each
with its own churches, schools, stores and tenements.
The development of the villages of Attawaugan,
Ballouville, Dayville, East Killingly, Rogers, South Killingly
and the Borough of Danielson was made possible by the prudent
investments and foresight of several early families, including
the Days, Danielsons and Alexanders.
Killingly has been proud to be known as the
birthplace of several figures of national importance. Mary Kies
was the first woman in the United States to receive a patent.
Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of Tiffany's in New York was born
and lived much of his life here. Henry Hammond was a prominent
early abolitionist.
Killingly is an Eastern Connecticut Enterprise
Corridor community, offering incentives and benefits to
manufacturers who locate here. Business opportunities abound,
whether it is existing mill space, vacant land or sites with
rail access. Danielson Main Street, Inc. is an active merchants
group located in the heart of the Killingly Historic District.
Through events and promotions the group promotes thriving retail
activity. Here you will find many unique items to purchase,
service agencies for your every need and dining establishments
that are exceptional.
Main Street Danielson is an attractive and
friendly place "Where Friends Meet" to shop and relax. The Town
of Killingly Parks and Recreation Department runs three parks in
town: Davis Park, Lions Park and Owen Bell Park. Owen Bell Park
has a little league field, softball field, track and field
complex, baseball field, outdoor basketball and tennis courts
and playground equipment for young children. The park has
restroom facilities and a concession stand that is open for
events and programs.
Some programs that the Recreation Department
offers are youth soccer and basketball, Community Theater, adult
volleyball and softball. There are also dance instructions for
children and adults, fitness program, family trips, contests,
races and Pre-K programs. Camps in soccer, basketball and
baseball are offered and there is a summer Day Camp for
children.
